Travel Tips

  • If travelling with a bunch of mates on holiday, create a transport kitty.  Everyone puts in a certain amount of money to cover taxi fares.  It saves the headache of splitting costs in the back seat of a cab.  At the end of the trip, split the different or buy a cocktail at the airport!

  • When packing a suitcase, put shower caps on the soles of packed shoes to stop packed clothes spoiling.

  • Take with you a large self-addressed envelope.  You can post paperwork back to yourself.  You just need to buy stamps.

  • If you have a paper address book, buy another and spend airflight time transferring details into the new book.  There's no better time.

  • On your travels, take one pair of sneakers or walking shoes, one good pair of shoes and a pair of thongs/flip flops.  That's it!

  • Use your digital camera to photograph maps.  Then, when out and about and need directions, just zoom in on your camera for assistance.

  • Collect toiletry samples well before departure.  They're fantastic for travel.

  • Stick to a combination of 3 colours for your wardrobe like Khaki, Red and Black or Navy, Cream and Red.  That way, everything matches everything.

  • Research, research, research.  Know your tourist attractions and upcoming events, know your restaurants (RSL clubs are fantastic) and know your prices.  This is the best way to maximise your travel experience. The local bread, cheese and a piece of fruit go a long way on a cheap budget.

  • As soon as you arrive at your destination, purchase the local paper.  It's amazing how many two for one discounts are on offer.  Better still, google your destination name plus the words "coupons vouchers discounts".  Print off the discounts you want and take with you.

  • Souvenirs are great but try to buy something you'll use every day.  Great local souvenirs include: summer clothes in the tropics, winter clothes in Europe, CDs by artists you saw perform, a postcard of artwork from a museum or gallery you visited, local maps, funky serviettes, cookbooks from the region you visited, supermarket toiletries, a printed menu from a restaurant you loved (if the owner is happy for you to take it), calendars, t-shirts for kids, the recipe of a favourite meal from a cafe (just ask!), and birthday cards from local newsagencies.  I once bought a flash potato peeler from a homewares shop along the Great Ocean Road.  Everytime I peel the potatoes it takes me back to that breezy summer holiday!
